Luo Zhong and Xiamen Botanic Garden

A four-line poem is inscribed in a stele in Xiamen Botanic Garden. The clumsy and steep yet flowing and beautiful calligraphy of the inscription is written by famous calligrapher Luo Zhong.  This poem is specially composed by him according to the sceneries in the botanic garden.  The 6m-high stele of garden title and many other inscribed boards and couplets in the garden are also written and engraved by Luo Zhong. Over all these years, Luo Zhong’s stele calligraphy has been silently watching this garden.

Inscription in Xiamen Botanic Garden by Luo Zhong

Luo Zhong, male, was born in 1944 in Xiamen. Famous calligrapher and painter, art name: Yun Yan Ju Zhu. Titles: Member of Chinese Calligraphers Association, Member of Chinese Couplets Society, Member of Chinese Couplets Calligraphy Art Committee, Secretary-General of Painters and Calligraphers Office of CPPCC Xiamen. He is living in Beijing. In his early years, he learned calligraphy and poems from his uncle Luo Dan and has absorbed much of the essence of “Luo Dan Style”. He is also good at cursive(Cao Shu), running(Xing Shu), official(Li Shu) and Wei(Wei Shu) scripts. To practice Li Shu, he studied many stele inscriptions of Han dynasty, especially Zhang Qian, Heng Fang, Shi Men Song and Cao Quan. He integrated all steles and blended Zhuan Shu (Seal script)and Han Jian(scripts on bamboo slips of Han Dynasty). He learned Cao Shu from inscriptions of Wang Xizhi, Huai Su, Sun Guoting and Wuzhen, integrating the stoicism of Master Hong Yi and the succinct style of Yu Youren. He practiced Wei Shu by studying Zhang Menglong, Zheng Wengong, Er Cuan, and especially Song Gao Ling Temple Inscription. Over recent years, he is engrossed in study of Wild Cursive script, by copying ancient masters like Zhang Zhi, Huai Su, Huang Tingjian and Wang Duo and has been getting better.
